5.0

The poems in THE NIGHT PATH are inspired by Kutchins’ experiences in the last few months of her pregnancy, as she contemplates her own life and the life growing inside her. The very first poem sets the tone for this impressive collection: It’s introspective and quiet, perfectly reflecting the winter landscape surrounding her. She offers poignant, thoughtful descriptions of what she perceives--the sights, sounds, and scents of her environment. Her style dances artfully between narrative and lyrical, offering stories but not plainly told. Though there are plenty of concrete images and vignettes, her lines could never be confused with prose. Through the intricate ways in which she words the everyday, Kutchins makes even the simplest moment seem mystical and full of wondrous possibility. If you appreciate the beauty of language and perspective, you will fall in love with this award-winning collection.
