I always feel bad when a publisher sends me a book and I hate but here we are. It didn’t start out very strong; any book that needs a prologue to draw the reader in makes me wary. The actual opening scene was weak and the MC has no personality, other than she thinks she’s different and the other kids are “sheep, all of them.” (Cue eye roll.) Then the accident happens, which did nothing to actually propel the plot forward, despite my optimism. The story drags endlessly and eventually there’s a conclusion that made little sense to me (although in retrospect, it sets it up for a sequel). McFall's writing isn't actually bad but the characters are formless and the story premise is thin, consequently its not what I consider readable.

I was sent a free copy of this book for review by Walker Books.

I’m actually sad because this story had some potential. It wasn’t something revolutionary, but an edible story could have come out of it.
The main character, Dylan, is a complete mess. She has no personality whatsoever, and several scenes had me just closing the book and thinking what’s wrong with this girl? I couldn’t relate to her in any level, so I couldn’t root for her either.
Tristan is no better. He feels as two dimensional as Dylan and he’s just simply boring.
They had no chemistry at all, the romance felt so strained and blah...
And after I fought my way through it, just to be done with it just to realized that it’s a trilogy... I have no intention to continue this.

I was excited to read this book when I first picked it up, however I was quickly disappointed. The premise was promising and the world building intriguing but thats about all I can say for it.

The main character is "not like other girls souls." (this is also the reason why the MMC falls for her.) and that's about all there is to say for her. She's sad about dying for all of 2 seconds before immediately brushing it off again, and barely gives a thought to the people left behind.

Both characters have little to no personality, and thus an equal amount of chemistry. They confess their love for each other halfway through the book (ick) even though they have probably had 3 meaningful conversations and all of them were about the guys past souls he ferried/world building fodder. Due to a lack of any real emotional depth between them, these scenes fell flat.

In the end, this book is just two people taking a hike and "falling" for the first people to show them an ounce of consideration.
