Wow, that was a whirlwind. This book is the 5th in the series and right from the start we're thrust into the action. Deception, prophecies, and magic are abound and we follow our ever-expanding cast of characters, all of whom have their own motives, their own objectives, and are all morally ambiguous. They all follow an ends justify the means type of philosophy, making their interactions one of the best parts of the story.

The plot is fast-paced and unpredictable. The author never ceases to weave in intricate twists and turns to the story. That cliffhanger at the end of the book though...just rude.

my 4.5 star TOP PICK RTBR review:

This magical series continues to thrill in its fifth book with surprising complications, including threats to Magnus and Cleo’s tumultuous relationship, Lucia’s prophesied fate and unpredictable alliances. Readers will be captivated by characters both loved and hated as the intensity of feelings rises to new heights with guilt and betrayal front and center.

As Amara takes over as empress, her brother Ashur returns from the dead and allies himself with Jonas and Nic, who is stunned by his unresolved feelings for Ashur. Gaius attempts to reconcile with Magnus, revealing a past full of secrets that explains his brutal behavior, but Magnus’s first priority is Cleo’s safety. Lucia’s pregnancy is affecting her travels, and after she discovers how much hope the immortals place in her, she finds an unexpected ally when she needs him most. As power tempts the most loyal friends and lovers from their devotion to each other, the Kindred deal a devastating blow that endangers them all.

4.5 STARS

My review doesn't have spoilers for this book, but if you haven't read previous books, you might want to look away after this paragraph. This is one of my favorite YA/HF Series and my expectations are always high when it comes to this group. Overall, I absolutely loved it and my only complaint is it needed to be longer. There are so many points of views, and while I like the way the story is told, the events themselves felt shorter than previous books. As always, there are countless twists and turns, and a killer ending that sent my reeling and cursing Morgan Rhodes. I really hope book 6 isn't the final installment. I'm not ready for this series to close.

Chapter Breakdowns - Slight spoilers for previous books only:
Magnus - hands down my favorite chapters. I've never gone from despising a character so much to loving them so completely. He's such a smarta$$ but he continues his inner battles and doing what he believes is best. His moments with Jonas (SHOCKER) were some of my favorites. Those two are going to end up friends at some point, I just know it.

Cleo - I've always adored her but she did have a few annoying moments. Not sure if that because I adore Magus and dislike when she's hurtful to him.

Jonas - He's still a top fav, but did seem a little darker at moments in this one. I couldn't get enough of his character and wanted more of his story.

Lucia - I am enthralled with the continuing evolution of her situation. Some of her earlier chapters were slow, but the endings were some of my favs. I cannot wait to see more of her in the next book.

Amara - My least favorite chapters because they distracted from my favorites above. Every story must have a villain, and she definitely fits the bill for this one. However, we all know quickly this series can change.

Is it December 2017 yet??

ok but why does this happen to literally the ONLY character I care about in this series...
*screams internally*
I can't believe you've done this Morgan Rhodes why???
This book was pretty good and entertaining but this ending wtf
I can't produce any coherent thoughts I'm just mad like I don't care about anyone else in this book except this one precious character who deserves everything good in life but instead gets everything bad this doesn't make sense. Meaning the book and my review.
Sorry for the last one, my bad.

I actually finished this two days ago, but needed time to formulate my thoughts and write the last review of the year. I highly enjoyed this book and I am sad I have to wait a year to see how it all ends!
