Ember is a kick ass leading leading woman. Vincent has just enough darkness to handle her. After the death of her mother Ember lives with her aunt and uncle where She meets Vincent. Their darkness balance each other out. Ember soon discover she has a brother and who her father is. Then the events surround this bring them closer. The cliffhanger at the end of the book just make you can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Through the Pain is the first book in the Whitsborough series. This book is told from Ember's point of view. Ember grew up in the Bronx with her mother. They have had a rough life, and Ember started fighting to help support her mom. This book starts out with there being a fire and her mother passing away. When she's in the hospital her mother's sister comes and she realizes she has more family. Her aunt and uncle take her in, and they are not hurting for money like her mother was.

As Ember is living with her aunt and uncle, she realizes her mom was hiding things. She meets a few friends. Two of her friends Adri and Travis are in love, but something happened between them. It makes hanging out a little rough for all of them. Ember starts to have feelings for Vin, and him her, but we find out Vin and Travis share a father, and they don't get along at all.

Ember is a fighter and will fight her way through anything that comes for her. As some secrets come out, Emer realizes not everything is as it seems. Can she fight her way out of something major that happens to her? At the end of this book, a big secret is dropped. However, we are lucky that with this box set book two starts right off after!

Complicated ties, and getting more twisted

I loved all the different dynamics at play here. So many family secrets, lost family, hidden family, and substitute family. Ember is a tough FMC who acts older than her age (17) and her story largely takes place in high school. This is really just a convenient place for these characters to meet and doesn’t impact the story much. There’s a plot twist towards the end that made me audibly gasp at the remarkable way it was woven in.

My only complaint (and it isn’t even much of a complaint) is that we skipped over so much of the day-to-day and character development. There’s so much time to cover, I realize adding in those scenes might have doubled the length of the book, but I prefer my romances to let the characters develop and not just drop in some major information like they’re passing details.

Wow! Through the Pain grabs you from the start and doesn't let you go, I'd say until the end of the book but the hook is just as amazing as the rest. Great writing, relatable characters and a suspenseful plot keeps you guessing throughout.

C. A. Rene is a new to me author and I absolutely loved her work, devouring this four book series in two days. Yes it really is that good. The books are written in multiple perspectives and so you are able to follow the action from the view points of a range of characters, exploring their motives behind what they do.

Through the Pain was a great read and I'd totally recommend it to anyone looking for a dark, suspense romance with a side of smut.

I don't know why I have taken so long to read this book. It was so good! There is a lot happening in this one with Ember moving to a new town and basically starting over wtih her life, but there is that looming threat of her past life coming back to haunt her.

Ember is hilarious. I have laughed until I cried so many times. She is confident, knows what she wants, doesn't care what people think about her, and knows how to hold her own. I can't wait to see her character grow as the story unfolds!

VIN!

A lot of lead up to that ending, but it's always good to read yet another powerful female character.

I really enjoyed this one a lot despite the characters being of high school age this is actually a new adult romance.
Emberlise is sixteen years old and an MMA fighter she has participated in legal and illegal fights where she grew up in the Bronx so has loose ties to the local gangs there.

After a fire that kills her mother and lands her in the hospital, she finds herself moving to Canada with her mum's sister and husband relatives she had no idea existed.
Starting the local school and her new family's wealthy lifestyle is so very different to her previous upbringing in New York. Though got to say her aunt and uncle were fabulous, real sweethearts.

A new School also brings its own set of teenage angst which Ember is more than equipped to deal with.
I adored how strong and capable Ember was she didn’t take shit from anyone including her new obsession Vin who at first doesn’t know quite what to make of the new girl but he does know he definitely wants her for his own.

Initially, he’s a bit of an ass used to girls falling at his feet and with Ember he has to put in some actual work and she nobody’s plaything.
Add in the resident mean girl who I’m sure has a lot more up her sleeve for our girl especially considering her jealousy of Ember now claiming Vin for herself and this was just so good.
Embers put-downs and comebacks to Marlana’s venom were priceless and I was egging her on all the way, This girl has a core of steel.

This also had fabulous secondary characters and Ember and Vin had so much chemistry together.
Then we took that dark turn and I was on the edge of my seat on absolute tenterhooks throughout.
How Ember is going to come back from this trauma is anyone’s guess.
A fabulous start to this series and I’m excited to see where this goes next especially considering that intriguing epilogue.
