I’m part of TNBBC’s Fight Song Blog Tour, and the other day, I was lucky enough to have Joshua Mohr on my blog talking about his quest for happiness and how it’s related to his amazing novel, Fight Song.
Fight Song chronicles a period in Bob Coffen’s when he is run down, with a job he despises, kids who would rather use technology than speak to him, and a wife, Jane, who is distancing herself. Bob finds some unexpected advice in strange places, such as with his overly aggressive and living-in-his-football-past neighbor, a janitor from work who is the lead singer in a unique Kiss band, and a fast food employee who makes extra cash as phone sex operator through the drive thru intercom.
Bob Coffen essentially goes on a quest to achieve happiness in his life. Some of the things I will take from Fight Song and Bob’s journey are:

A lot of books have disaffected middle-aged guy characters; Mohr's character development of Bob Coffen is great.

Bob’s story is raw, sometimes (darkly) humorous, sometimes serious, and often embarrassing. I enjoyed everything about Fight Song, and I highly recommend it.

The style of this book reminded me a lot of The Financial Lives of Poets by Jess Walters. One incident that causes a chain reaction of bad ideas and funny hijinx.
At times it was a little difficult to see how Bob had wound up in some of these situations, but it sure made for some funny reading! The one aspect I didn’t particularly care for was his wife. I just didn’t like her, she was so strange. Also, how does a human tread water for over 80 hours. Where did she go to the bathroom, how did she sleep? It’s all I could think about!
Now I usually try not to comment on book covers, but I have to on this one. This is one of the worst covers I have ever seen, I’m sorry. It’s boring, almost textbook like! If they could get a better cover on this book, I think it might get more people to read it.
Despite the cover, Mohr writes with a funny, young voice. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and never knew what to expect! I look forward to see what he was to write in the future.
