Sweet Pea is a likeable character. As far as different character types, Sweet Pea is fat, but it isn't a focal point for the book; it is just her body type. I think that is awesome. I would love to meet Sweet Pea's eccentric neighbor. Valentine, Texas - here I come!

This a delightful, funny novel that's fat positive, queer positive, and full of great music. My one quibble is the MC's acting out seems more based in the way adults view seventh-graders than how young people see themselves--not in a big way, it just felt a little over the top. On the other hand, I LOVED how Julie Murphy portrayed friendships, changes in friendships, and emotional growth.

Such heart! Murphy tackles middle grades incredibly authentically and Sweet Pea is a great character.

I did enjoy this one, but sometimes it fell a bit flat for me. And I really can't explain why... I will have to ponder this one for a while
