I had a blast with this book. The story was lovely and simple but kept me engaged nonetheless, the characters were endearing and more well-developped than what I was anticipating. Arion was totally my type. A black-haired, taciturn, reserved and strong man? Sign me up. Tari was adorable: she was calm, stalwart and at times impulsive. I enjoyed following their relationship and seeing both of them grow on their own as well.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This was a pretty good fantasy read! Just like the other books I have read by K.M. Shea, it has delightful humor, an interesting cast of characters, and exciting action scenes.
My favorite thing about this book are the unique spins the author put on classic fantasy tropes. For example, the elves in this book are definitely more powerful than humans are, just like how they always are in fantasy books. However, the elves in this book don't look down or distrust humankind like elves usually do in fantasy stories. I love the comradery between the elves and humans and how they both worked hard to maintain an amiable relationship, despite the language and cultural barriers.
Though I did like many things about this book, I have to admit that it isn't my favorite K.M. Shea book. I think the main reason why I didn't absolutely love it is because it felt rushed. Though this book is part of a series, each book features a different couple and story line. That means that the Tari and Arion's complete story was told in less than 300 pages. I wish that this book had been just a little bit longer, so that we could have had more scenes where Tari and Arion connected with each other.
That's not to say I completely hated the romance though! Tari and Arion do have some super cute scenes, especially towards the end!!!
I hope that they will make some cameo appearances in the other books in the series!
While this isn't my favorite K.M. Shea book, it is still a good story and one that I suggest fantasy fans check out!

I enjoyed this, it's a very light and easy read, funny in places and sweet throughout (a few kisses but otherwise totally clean). I liked the main characters, they were so different but fitted together so well and the mix of the other characters was fun.

Plot twist: You thought he was the oblivious one but the whole time it’s actually been you.

This book was fun. Nothing too serious here, all the problems get resolved far too easily, but... it's fluffy and fun. And FUNNY. Most humorous books don't appeal much to me, but this book managed to keep the tone just right throughout, light enough that the humor seemed appropriate instead of jarring, serious enough that you could actually pay attention to the plot. It was funny enough that I smiled several times and actually laughed at that one scene....
Also. Humorous audiobook was just the right thing for keeping me alert on a ridiculously long drive. How long? I began and finished the audiobook during the drive, and took some breaks from listening during the trip. That long.

The drinking scene. Hilarious perfection. Not only for how it was written but for how many other things the author COULD have done, that I have read in other stories, but aren't nearly as funny. This was completely ridiculous and yet utterly believable. Just right for this story.Also. Humorous audiobook was just the right thing for keeping me alert on a ridiculously long drive. How long? This is a cozy, low-stakes fantasy romance and such an easy and fun read. I found I enjoyed the main characters and honestly wanted to adopt some of the side characters especially our Honor Guard trio. You can tell there is some political intrigue building for the series but it's done subtly so that it doesn't hurt the brain to think about. A very sweet and lovely fantasy romance, can't wait to read the rest of the series.
