Meh. Good characters but all about racism, which right now I didn't care to be reading about. I hate all the "isms".

So much racism, mostly self-aware.

4.5 stars. Dennis Lehane is a really fantastic writer. I've enjoyed all of his books that I've read!

Great noir mystery with lots of atmosphere and convincing characterization.

First in the Kenzie/Gennaro series. Ready for book #2. Lehane's style, his familiarity with the hardscrabble elements of Boston, weaving history into this story, a face paced read that I finished in just a few days.

Come on! This is how Patrick and Angie get together and it’s perfect. Best Lehane of all.

The author's voice has a five-o-clock shadow and hint of whiskey on its breath without being tropey. I only ask for Ward's recommendations when I want a "guy" book, and I got it. :)

My first Lehane. Not my last. There's a bit too much telling & moralizing, which just wouldn't work in third person. But Patrick Kenzie's smart-mouthed voice makes even preaching readable, and the story is constantly taut and usually life-threatening. Not a book to put down once you pick it up.

But the main reason I'll come back to Kenzie & Gennaro: I like them. They're screwed up people who screw up and then try to fix it. They fail and it's sometimes their fault. But they try to make sense of their stark world and do the right thing with the sense they've made. I want to meet up with them again.

I no li poso, apa.
