My one and only criticism of this book: if there was an attempt to defend the Black Panthers against the accusations of male chauvinism, this did not do justice to that side. It is possible the editing of this book / year of publication holds the fault of only 20 pages authored by women of some 300. It was glaring that each chapter compiled highlight writings of individual men, and one 20 page chapter is given for all Black Panther women to be lumped into.
This book was excellent in trajectory and rawness of the Black Panther Party self-defined philosophy and activism. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to hear the BPP speak for themselves in the early years. All power to the People.

Fantastic and in-depth. The BPP was incredible. I particularly loved Bobby Seale’s writing and speeches.

Think I’ll be re-reading and re-reading this for a very long time. Primary sources, incredibly insightful and timeless. Almost crazy how relevant the politics of the panthers are in the modern day, makes you wonder what they could’ve achieved if not for the oppressive/homicidal US state.

A phenomenal anthology of primary sources from numerous leaders in the Black Panther Party, from founders Huey Newton & Bobby Seale, to transcendent individuals like Fred Hampton, to more ignored figures like Afreni Shakur and Eldridge Cleaver. Tackles everything from the nature of revolution, the why of the fight, issues of nationalism, machismo, sexism, and even homophobia, and how to build rainbow coalitions to oppose fascism and imperialism and build power from the ground up. What a work of historiography.

One of my top books of 2020. This book was excellent. If you’ve ever wanted to read about the Black Panthers this is a great book to start at because it gives you primary accounts from members of the Black Panthers, newspaper articles, speeches and more. The first few chapters were broken down by member’s and their speeches and writings. You get the chance to read pieces from Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, women of the Black Panthers and others. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the language that was being used by the party to convey their beliefs. It can be a bit dense but still worth the time.
