Imagine your two favorite genres merging 🖤🖤 Historical fiction and horror have been paired up by Alma Katsu. Is a vengeful ghost of a scorned lover haunting the Titantic? Possibly. Is the same ghost also haunting the Britannic? Possibly. Fascinating read.

In 1916, Annie is a nurse newly arrived on board the HMHS Britannic, White Star sister ship to the Titanic, now being used as a medical ship for wounded soldiers during WWI. Annie survived the sinking of the Titanic four years previously, and is surprised to find one of the wounded soldiers is Marc, a man she forged a connection with on that ship. Being together again brings back memories of all that happened on the Titanic before the iceberg hit.

Katsu has composed an engaging work of supernatural historical fiction. The story toggles between 1916 and 1912, with most of the action taking place on the Titanic. There are multiple threads and POVs as we follow Annie, Marc, and other characters both real and fictional, both first class and steerage (I especially enjoyed following Les and Dai, boxers and secret lovers, as they interacted with the rich). Pervading all is a post-seance mystery of whether or not there's a ghost on the ship, and if it has managed to possess one of the passengers. The resolution to the mystery was quite satisfying.

Well written and highly recommended.
