FIRST LINE REVIEW: "It was a diamond all right, shining in the grass half a dozen feet from the blue brick walk." Another exciting, intricate mystery from the crime noir canon. Hammett keeps the action constant and the twists surprising, right down to the final chapter when all the strings are neatly tied up.

This one's a solid Continental Op story, losing points only by virtue of not being Red Harvest. The episodic structure is interesting, a bit like meeting with Rickey Henderson at regular intervals throughout the baseball season to find out how his life of larceny is progressing.

First ever bootleg book I've read. Apparently the Russian publishing company photocopied the pages and worked from that, because there aren't any misspellings, but the typesetting is off in an indescribable way. Viva la bookswaps!

It's too easy to guess who the killer is, and once you do that the story drags a bit, but it's good to know where the style originated. Hammett is a good transition between older, more mannered detective stories and [author:Raymond Chandler|1377].

Plus, since Hammett actually was a privte eye, there is some added credibility to what happens.

Read this, and then settle back with [book:The Big Sleep and Other Novels|105711]

Goodreads Project #2: I never put much stock in "mystery" novels 'til I discovered noir and Hammett--by then end of this book I'll be talkin' like Bogart in "...Falcon" (LOL)

I'm just really glad I accidentally discovered that I'm over my previous dislike of Hammett. So much goodness to reread!
