2.5 More likely.. Maybe 3...MOST likely 3 the longer I muse on it, I'm SO indecisive about ratings sometimes arrgghhhhhhhhhhh..

ANYWHO. Now that that Shrilly moment has passed, let's have a little discussion about this book.

We shall delve into the bad first, I say! I really couldn't get over the pretentiousness for the first half (at least if not a little more then that). I mean, this is a book that thinks it is too cool for school and is like a walking talking hipster. Dash, our male protagonist, grated on me a bit as well; he really is a pretentious little arse. I felt like I was trapped in an overwrought teen rom-com movie most of the time; I could literally visualize most of the scenes vividly (which is good on the flipside because it made it a vivid book). BUT that all being, said, the back half of the book redeemed it quite a bit for me.

Once Lily and Dash finally meet, I think the book took steps to improving. I didn't feel like the authors' gimmick was being teased out any further at that point to detriment. I had begun to wonder if they were indeed ever going to meet before the final page! Thank God they did, because it was nice and refreshing. The characters and interactions between said folks are what really made this book redeemable. They are interesting and flamboyant and New York all wrapped up with a bow and tossed at your with a flourish of confetti. Speaking of, New York City itself is a character in this one, for sure.

If only the beginning of this book hadn't been so ostentatious, I think I would have gotten into it more and had a better outlook on it. Unfortunately, it took me til the last 150 pages or so to really want to finish it. That being said, if you can stand something being just too cool and in your face about how dashing it is (see, see what I did there? :p), then this isn't a terrible rom-com like read. It even made me laugh OUT LOUD a couple of times, which isn't too shabby. Also a must for lovers of NYC, baby!

Dash and his love for the OED inspired this wordy review ;) Til the next read!

Reread 2020: I reread because I loved the TV show, well, the show was way better than the book in my opinion.

Honestly, this book was just cute. I loved the story line, the characters weren't annoying at all and it's a Christmas book! Who doesn't line Christmas books? (Well, besides Dash....) I can't wait to read more books by this pair :)

Cute enough. Not a lot of substance, but enjoyable and fast.

4.5 for this one. I enjoyed the clever writing and loved that the characters were both bibliophiles.

Good book, but it did require a suspension of reality while reading it because of all the coincidences.

E Lily. Insopportabile a livelli gravi.
