The beginning and end of this book were engaging. The middle was very boring and forgettable. Glad I listened to an audiobook instead of reading it because it dragged on so much.

I came straight from Nick Offerman's delightful reading of ".. Tom Sawyer", and I just could not get into Elijah Wood's voice. I'm a fan of the actor, but something about his accents just took me out of the immersive experience and I had to move on. May revisit.

"I about made up my mind to pray; and see if I couldn't try to quit being the kind of boy I was, and be better. So I kneeled down. But the words wouldn't come. Why wouldn't they? It warn't no use to try and hide it from Him. Nor from me, neither. I knowed very well why they wouldn't come. It was because my heart wasn't right; it was because I warn't square; it was because I was playing double. I was letting on to give up sin, but away inside of me I was holding on to the biggest one of all. I was trying to make my mouth say I would do the right thing and the clean thing, and go and write to [Jim's:] owner and tell where he was; but deep down in me I knowed it was a lie— and He knowed it. You can't pray a lie— I found that out...
...It was a close place. I took it up, and held it in my hand. I was a trembling, because I'd got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: 'All right, then, I'll go to Hell' —and tore it up."

It was a very good book for its time, and while I can’t really hold Twain to the standards of current society, I still found the way he ended Hucks growth as a character to be a bit halfassed. The ending itself left a lot to be desired.

Finally finished reading it for english. I am glad I chose to read this book because it has been on my list forever. It was a little bit confusing and redundant, and then I looked and all of a sudden it was over. Obviously, there is heavy use of racial slurs, and takes place in the southern United States. Anyways, I am excited to talk about it!
