It is an uncomfortable book, you need to read it with a very critical eye and understanding between the lines about different situations. There are disgusting and possibly unnecessary lines and moments, but there is a part where the author explains why some situations and their subtexts happen.

Disgusting, provocative and too audacious to represent the human being.

The writing was awful, the plot was confusing, and the main character is a whiny mary sue

read as preparation for the upcoming movie starring daniel craig. very interested in what they’ll make of it, because this was, some mild interest in queer culture of before my time aside, pretty uninteresting and mildly infuriating. quick read tho, and i do enjoy some of that very plain, matter-of-fact writing style in books every once in a while.
