Color me impressed to know that Sagan wrote this at such a young age. I found myself smirking already at the first few pages when the narrator reflects on how unattractive people make her uncomfortable. It's a short and quick read with a lot ideas to digest.

« i’m not satisfied with myself. i don't like myself, and i don't try to. at moments you force me to complicate my life, and i almost hate you for it. »
— françoise sagan, bonjour tristesse

this book follows the story of cécile and her rich father who seems to be incapable of making up his mind which woman he’d like to marry.

i personally enjoyed reading about cécile. yes, she’s annoying and the stereotypical, rich, french girl, but i liked the depiction of how she lived in freedom, growing up with her father (without a mother figure) her whole life and then suddenly, she is thrown into this life with these women who steal not only her dad, but also her own independence. the rest of the characters were quite dull and idiotic and so were their relationships. they weren’t built upon anything, which is why i didn’t understand why anne committed suicide at the end.

i do applaud the author for her poetic yet simple writing style, truly a breath of fresh air.

I really disliked this book. Maybe it was because I read the translated version and I should've just read it in French, but the story disappointed me so much.
