A chilling page turner. I wasn’t sure where it was going when I started it, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. I stayed up until 0130 this morning reading it until I was about to fall asleep.

A lively Gothic thriller, Boyne's "This House is Haunted" manages to follow all the rules of the classic ghost story while feeling fresh and energetic. Even though none of the twists come as a huge shock, they are telegraphed delightfully. The story supports itself while never succumbing to pastiche - much - and the whole thing is held together by an incredibly likeable narrator. Deserves a place on the bookshelf alongside "The Woman In Black." RECOMMENDED.

This isn’t what I was expecting but I think it’s all the better for it.
When I first looked into getting this book, I thought it would be a scary story with frightening imagery. This was underscored by the fact I found it in the “horror” section of the bookshop. Thankfully, it wasn’t at all like that.
It’s what I would deem a gothic tale with slightly spooky overtones. It was a perfect story for Spooktober. There were a few spooky images but nothing overly violent or gory. It was relying on more subtlety than explicit shock value and I thought the subtlety of the story was part of its charm.
