This is a delight to read. The writing and the translation are beautiful. The trivial to-and-fro of island life, and in particular the relationship between a young girl and her grandmother, becomes a whole world for the reader and the inhabitants to explore. A wonderful space is created on many levels. The space of the island, its surrounding islands, and the sea; the space between short pieces of dialogue; and, the space between each of the short episodes.

Wonderful lyrical essays about one summer on an island with a granddaughter and grandmother. I read a few lists at the beginning of this summer where people said they read this book every summer, and I understand why. I can't wait to reread it.

this...was not for me. while the summer book features an idyllic island setting mainly focused ona grandmother and granddaughter duo, i find it surprisingly tedious bc of its plotless and aimless wanderings, despite some funny and wise moments, and honestly dont rly get the rave reviews.
