Reading about dirt poor Newfoundland colonists is very much my shit. I loved this but not everyone will. I was extremely leery of the taboos present here. I think it works well in a Biblical framework.

After their parents die from a harsh illness, youngsters Evered and Ava struggle to survive with what little knowledge they have. Crummy does an excellent job of portraying the unrelenting difficulties of coastal Newfoundland, and the prose is so perfectly written to place you there with them. However, there's an underlying uneasiness to the book. There are horrific scenes showing desperate attempts at survival, and an uncomfortable sexual tension between brother and sister that surfaces often in the latter half of the book.
