This is, in my opinion, the most ambitious novel that I have yet read by Karin Slaughter. We're following two timelines, each with its own cast of characters. Most of the book is actually following the oldest timeline, where we see Amanda Wagner's rise as a detective in the 1970s. Following Amanda gave me so much more respect and empathy for a character that I have wanted to push off of a cliff in every previous book. Her struggle and awakening to the world around her were so fascinating to read, and I love a good girl boss gang.

In the other timeline, we follow Will and Sara as they navigate their new relationship all while trying to get Will's dad put back in jail. Will is still my precious baby boy, even when I want to scream at him to open up to Sara. After the events of this book, I'm hoping that he can a little more. And then there's Sara, who might be one of my favorite characters of all time. Her compassion for those around her, her willingness to do what it takes to get justice, and her fire all make her such a wonderful woman to read about. I especially loved reading her perspective in this book as she realizes that she is in love with Will. Several yells of triumph were heard in my apartment during the reading of this book.

"They couldn't understand why I would want to do a man's job. You should hear my mother-in-law on the subject." She laughed ruefully. "This job changes you. It changes how you think,  how you see the world. I don't care what the boys say. We are cops. We live it and breathe it as much as they do."

I loved this book in the series. It really dove deep in the past of Amanda and Will. I also felt that Ms. Slaughter did a phenomenal job showing us how women were viewed in law enforcement in the 70’s era.

On a side note I still do not like Angie but the ending of the book made me dislike her a little less. Some people just live differently I suppose.

Suspenseful read, lots of twists and turns. Some gruesomeImurders. I found it hard to come back to after a few days of not reading because of the chapters flipping between time periods and characters. Overall, really enjoyed the thriller.
