Okay, so the satanic references were not specific to the other David Yoon book I read, but neither was the humor.
He’s funny. It was funny.
Racism explored, immigrants explored, terminal illness and cancer along with fake dating and high school shenanigans.
It was pretty good.

Honestly, I'm not the right person to write a review about this book. My thoughts are not OwnVoices in the slightest, so I'll keep it incredibly brief:

This book is hard to read. It tackles a lot--a LOT-- of really difficult racial and political topics. If you think you're about to read a cute YA romcom, just know that's not what you'll be getting. The romance is minimal, the family is priority, and the hard conversations take center stage.

I enjoyed the almost dark teen humor and the author's way of writing. However, I don't think I would be desperate to pick up the next book in the series.

aside from the writing style being slightly cringey this book was very cute, the ending was so bittersweet

5 stars for the supportive friends and complex family dynamic, 2.5 stars for the 2 (two!) instalove relationships and tedious/childish narrative voice
