I started reading these because obviously I binged the tv series. Usually I prefer the book version of things but not this time. Still an amazing story obviously because look what it made, amazing tv, but there’s something missing from the books I can get on screen. Pains me to say it.

It is a really good book. Just really long. I didn’t realize it when I started it. I do want to read the rest of the series when I have more time. This is one I was much happier to enjoy by audiobook than by actually reading it. It was easier to keep track of things because the narrator actually used different voices.

This is one of the very few books where I would first recommend to watch the series and read the book afterwards. Although the book itself is very good (and the series dofollow it very closely), you can tell that Diana Gabaldon was only starting here and some moments could convey a slightly wrong atmosphere. While when you know the series, you can tell right away what vibe was the autor striving for.

Another thing to note is that Claire in the series is a very strong independent and mature character right from the start, while in the book she first comes across as slightly naive, sometimes annoyingly so. She does eventually become the same amazing Claire from the series, but only towards the end of the book. On one side it's nice that the author made her characters grow throughout the story, but then again, Claire was meant to be a war nurse, therefore you could expect her to be mature and strong from the start (just as she was in the series). Jamie's character growth on the other hand feels slightly more natural in the book.
