I really loved this book! I tore through it in about a week (granted I was called for jury duty and had lots of time to read in a quiet room) but I honestly think I liked it more than the first! While the first was a great way to introduce the characters and story lines, and it all comes together in the end which moves seamlessly into this second book, I felt more “in” the story during the second book. Less character introduction and more on resolution and getting into the nitty gritty of the conflicts. I felt like it moved quickly and explained a lot of things that I still had questions about from the first book. This series reminds me of a cross between Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, and a little bit of Game of Thrones vibes as well. Just started reading the third and I can’t wait to see how it ends! Really enjoyed this fantasy series after reading mostly romance the last couple years.

Just started dragging. Maybe it's me; maybe it's winter, but I'm had trouble keeping track of all the lingo and staying engaged.

Still very obsessed with this series. It just keeps getting more and more dynamic and energizing, and in particular about this one I enjoyed seeing Essun and Nassun in such complex lights. Neither of them are your typical hero (or villain for that matter) and I love them and NK Jemisin for that. I saw a video that described this as a perfect book for folks who enjoy morally gray characters, and this is hella true. What I think is particularly impressive in this book character-wise is how each character is their own person but also is a force and foil for everyone else around them. The trauma narratives are also really tragically and gorgeously woven in as well, there's so much perspective and understanding while you watch devastating consequences unfold left and right. SUPER rich stuff, folks.

Some of the choices that N.K. Jemisin made with this book didn’t really click with me, and I was starting to think this might be a bit of a disappointment for me but the climax singlehandedly won me over. Overall I would consider this an inferior book to the The Fifth Season, but I still think that it’s a great book in its own right and I’m excited to finish the trilogy soon.
