I know this is universally loved & there were factors of it I definitely enjoyed, but it just didn't quite hit for me, felt underwhelming in a lot of ways

no one can write girlhood like elena ferrante. it’s so unsettling, raw, but so deeply realistic. it explores the politics of italy, mother-daughter relationships, poverty, the male gaze, and friendship all in one and i’m just so obsessed. finished it on my kindle and instantly went to purchase the rest of the series. ty elena ferrante. and here’s to women in translate month :*

“No one understood us, only we two — I thought — understood one another.”

I had to read this cause my friends are obsessed freaks, so I had to investigate. I’m not a massive fan of 1st pov however it works so well for the storytelling, it really feels like you’re being told a story rather than just reading it and I enjoyed that a lot. the dynamic between elena and lila is really what kept me seated, these two girls who have been branded “good” and “bad” and their lives have went down different paths yet they are always there for one another. fuck all the other characters, especially the MEN. Ferrante breathes such life into her characters that they are true to what we know, she is not afraid to show the flaws of her characters and she is, most definitely, not afraid to show the violence and the cruel mindset of men.

This series from Ferrante is an absolute triumph, each book as enthralling as the last. I couldn’t recommend this series more.
