this was an emotional look into girlhood, with so many themes and emotions that transcend time and place. while the setting of mid-twentieth century, working-class Italy heavily informed the plot and the characters, it still felt relatable as someone who experienced growing up a girl.

the complex relationship between Elena and Lila was written so well. i felt like i knew the two girls, and often felt like i had to hide behind my hands because girls still act like that sometimes!! i really enjoyed the commentary on class and injustice in that era of Italy.

I know this is universally loved & there were factors of it I definitely enjoyed, but it just didn't quite hit for me, felt underwhelming in a lot of ways

the first half was really slow and frankly, after all the praise i had heard, disappointing. i was tempted to dnf but went on reading because i really wanted to love it. it got a lot better in the second half and the ending was completely unexpected- will definitely be reading the second part now! not bad at all but i would definitely prefer the inseparables by simone de beauviour as a story about complex and deep female friendship.

This series from Ferrante is an absolute triumph, each book as enthralling as the last. I couldn’t recommend this series more.
