A short while back, you may have seen my post, Kickstarter Project: Our Final Halloween. When I read the promotional details and saw a sneak peek into the comic, I backed the project immediately.
I am so very thankful to have been given an early release copy of this, and I’m so glad to say that it was just as incredible as I had hoped it would be!
This comic is a wonderfully blood-pumping, anxiety-inducing tale that really comes to life through the extremely vivid colors of the illustrations. If you’re looking for a great Halloween read, look no further… This one will really set your Halloween night off on the right foot!
When we begin the story, we read a bit of narration to set the scene while looking at a seemingly quiet town. But once you flip the page and get a glimpse into one of the houses on the street, that totally changes.
Five kids have “woken up” in an abandoned house. Per the synopsis: They don’t know why they’re there, how they got there, or whose blood they’re covered in. Yikes! But things are about to get even weirder… The five soon discover notes written on the walls and on each others arms; notes that they had written, trying to warn themselves.
The portal is already open… Will the kids heed their own warnings before it’s too late?
Phew, I loved that the team starts off totally clueless. It really added a wonderfully scary tone to the story right from the start. Plus, ya know, the fact that they were all covered in blood also played a major role in the creep factor as well.
The storyline flowed so well! I loved how each of the panels were organized, sometimes swapping back and forth between the characters in different rooms of the house. I just couldn’t wait to see what happened next!
The artwork was really neat! I loved the color palette that was chosen and all of the texture that was added in. I loved how simple it was, but how vibrant. I also loved how bright the blood was, and boy was there a lot of that!
And of course… with all the very best horror tales…. THAT ENDING! Perfection.
In this copy, there is also bonus content which I thought was really fun! I loved the additional sketches and how the style of each page was so different from the next. Then the essay on seasonal horror by Shaun Kimber was also super interesting! I didn’t know that this was a sub-genre of its own!
