I went into this book not knowing anything about it and I think that was a definite advantage. On the surface this is a love story but it is so much more than that and I think that the way it tackles friendship and teenage relationships in general is very well done. The only books about homosexuality that I have read have been by David Levithan and they have all been about males, whereas Maureen Johnson explores female homosexuality in this book and also female friendships. I think that it is important to experience these kinds of stories and understand them from all sides so this was a really interesting and unique book in that way.

The writing style was easily readable and accessible and made for a really speedy read overall. The chapters are short, as they usually are in YA contemporary, adding to the quick pace.

I really enjoyed the characters in this novel and thought they were believably flawed but lovable and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen to them next as I felt like I genuinely cared about them.

Overall I would recommend this contemporary novel to readers of any age. Although it had a different feel to the Maureen Johnson books I’ve previously read, I still loved the writing style and the depth of the story.
