There's a reason this play is famous and considered a "must-read" for anyone with an interest in the history of British theatre.

You'll be shocked.

Urgh.

Being a piece of assigned reading and a play of about only 90 pages or so, I made myself read this over the course of a day. I am just thankful that it was only a matter of hours that I had to endure this, any longer and I may have had to toss it upon burning embers.

I don't know how to rate this. It is both important and incredibly disturbing, so I suppose it should get four/five stars. But I can't say I enjoyed it, so I don't want to award them!

Read this one as part of my drama course and I can conclude its social and historical context far overshadows the plot and content. An interesting insight into views of the working class at the time but not really a pleasant read. The dialogue is very bitty and written phonetically in many cases, so would probably be better performed rather than read. The characters are extremely dislikable but that is sort of the point.
