Although this book had more information than I was looking forward to about EVERY player in this tragic story, it was very well researched. It provided context to the political climate at the time and all the factors that could have influenced the verdict that was made. Thankful that this story was researched and archived for history.

The author spends entirely way too much time talking about the white people than the enslaved woman, Celia that we wanted to read about. First I let it slide the first few chapters was about the slaveowners history of getting to their place of power, family history wise. But it seems like Celia only makes up about 30% of the story. Her parts I think are actually very well written, but it seems like it’s a bit too cozy for white people. This was written in a way to not upset white people.

Also, the speculation on stuff seems stupid. Like who would’ve thought Celia probably didn’t want to get r worded. I get you can’t just stick words or thoughts onto real people…. But r word and abuse??? It’s not that the author speculates that she did like it, but moreso they over speculated every form of abuse. Like we get it, she’s not here to tell us how she felt, but we can assume it wasn’t rainbows and butterflies. You don’t have to tell us you don’t know how she felt every time it pops up.
