This book is SO incredible. From North Korean poverty to being human trafficked in China to becoming a South Korean citizen, Yeonmi's story is definitely a relevant, necessary read for anyone looking for a personal account of life in North Korea and the struggles escape it and adapt to the modern world.

At times difficult to read because of the hardships she's faced, along with her mother, the story brings light to several ongoing humanitarian crises, while presenting it in away that is easy to understand. I also had to remind myself that this is not fiction, that the things that she went through happened in the same world that I live in, and it has moved me deeply.

I would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a story of strength, love and hope.

Yeonmi Park divides her memoir, In Order to Live, (written at twenty-one) into three parts: North Korea, China, South Korea. In North Korea, the former Soviet Union and China have abandoned the country. This led to economic collapse, crop failures, and widespread starvation. At thirteen, she escaped to China, where she and her mother were trafficked. A few years later she and her mother escaped to South Korea (via Mongolia). By the end of the book, she is an international human rights activist.

Yeonmi’s story is a fantastic rags-to-riches story which some believe is too fantastic to be true.

Incredible book. It's hard to read/hear everything she had to endure to survive. My kids are 13 years old, the same age as she was when she was trafficked, I cannot even imagine everything it took within her to make it. No child should have to live thru that. The worst thing about this book, is that it's so recent...just a few years ago and things unfortunately have not changed. Definitely recommending this one to my friends.
