Fuck I wish I wasn't an only child.

I hate contemporary references in books with a passion but this one isn't that bad.

My only issue is Jayne is constantly said to be an emotional character but reading through I can barely get a sense of her thought process. She does things / takes actions at random,
Spoiler for example: kicking out jeremy, going with june to the doctor,
and there was no build up or explanation as to why she decided to do those things. Actually it didn't have to be explained, but those moments felt random from a character whose thoughts we're exclusively able to read. Makes the character feel plot-driven as opposed to character-driven, but the story as a whole doesn't feel the same.

I guess my other issue is misused AAVE. But also... Asian American? From Texas? New York transplants? Color me shocked.

This is a wonderfully well written novel which examines the issues of family and self expectations, abuse, neglect, self hate, eating disorders, and hod bad sexual experiences scar some people for life.

Review Summary : In terms of pacing, I'd likely have finished this book in a day if it didn't elicit so many emotions. As the reader, you shadow Jayne through the thick of it all: her environment, her relationships, her memories, and her self destructive choices. While the most remarkable facet of the story lies in the character development, the plot pulse is strong to carry the narrative to the end. And speaking of the ending, hands down one of my favorite book endings to date. It's a book of complicated love, for self and others, a book about growth and healing for the self, and a book of fernweh... of longing to longing for places you've never been and connections you crave.

Rating: 5/5 . Jayne's gonna stick with me for a long time and if you're young, questionably dumb, and carrying unresolved hurts I think you should give it a read.
