Enjoyable story and I really felt for the characters but not enough clues/mystery plot for me. I expected more of those and a tad more mystery woven in. Maybe it’s just me but I thought it was just ok.

A bit of a mystery that is also the story of a family.

This quirky family is like none you have ever met before. Isaac predicts his own murder and leaves a cryptic note asking for his life's work to be destroyed before it gets into the wrong hands but it soon becomes clear that the wrong hands might just be his family. The Severys' love the smart ones of their brood, tolerate the pretty ones and cut out those who make reprehensible choices but through it all is their incessant need to solve problems, know their legacy and determine once and for all if destiny can be predicted. Readers of "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?", "Be Frank with Me" or "The Spellman Files" will appreciate the foibles of these characters. Mystery readers will enjoy figuring out the assassin and if you just want a quirky, new book - pick this one up!

I enjoyed the first half of the book far less than the second half. Just when I found myself truly engaged, the book ended. First half 2 stars. Second half 4 stars.

I really enjoyed this book and these characters. It's fun to be surprised by a mystery!

I'm not much of a mystery person, but this related more to family dynamics than mystery. I enjoyed the story, and although I guessed some of the "mystery" aspects, it still kept me more than entertained enough to finish quickly. Great debut novel.

Technically, a 3.5 star review. I originally picked up this book a while ago. Mainly because I’m a math teacher and was intrigued by the mathematician at the center of the story. What I didn’t expect from the book was a story of family, secrets, and a mystery to go along with it. Hazel Severy is left in charge of her adoptive grandfathers prize equation. She must find this equation and safely deposit it in the hands of a trusted colleague. Along the way she battles the rest of the family and some outsiders who want the equation as well. She also has to fend off fate (or the inevitable mathematics as her grandfather would say) that says three more people will die. Hazel was just a lovey and dynamic character. She is in a transition period herself where her life isn’t going as she planned. So this welcome distraction is helping her figure that out. I really enjoyed getting to know all the different family members. I enjoyed the plot. I will also say that you do not need a math background to enjoy this book. The math isn’t the central focus. It is kind of a secondary character. A wonderful mystery to quench your appetite friends! Do enjoy this one!

caricatures =/= characters
the entire premise of the mystery kind of made no sense? like its not a mystery you could solve bc the fancy math genius plot was applied to the randomest, most obscure thing but its also not a mystery you feel especially compelled to solve
props for vigilante thing but also kind of irrelevant
