Had I been a bigger poetry fan, I would have enjoyed this more. All things considered though, this is a great collection that I thought really captured modern day struggles really well. This was a lot of fun and had some awesome topics that varied from light-hearted to serious issues so there was something for everyone. I wish I got poetry more so I could have enjoyed this more.

DNF. The poetry format made it hard to read.  And also I just felt like I didn't "get it".

“This is for all the grown women out there
Whose countries hate them and their brothers
Who carry knives in their purses down the street
Maybe they will not get out alive
Maybe they will turn into air or news or brown flower petals
There are more beautiful things than Beyoncé:
Lavender, education, becoming other people,
The fucking sky.”

This collection made me smile. It made me reread and reflect. I found that I enjoyed Morgan’s voice. There’s beauty, anger, hope. The social commentary and pop culture references: I’m all the way here for it! And although I’m not part of the Beyhive, I love the reverent and irreverent Beyoncé poems. However, this collection is so much more than Bey.

Some of my faves were: The President Has Never Said the Word Black
Hottentot Venus
The Book of Negroes
The Gospel According to Her
White Beyoncé
Untitled While Listening to Drake
99 Problems

I really wasn’t sure what to expect with this collection. Sure, the name and cover alone made me pick it up, but the words made me stay. I don’t seek out poetry and I’m not sure if I’d be the one to define what is good or bad poetry. If you can connect to the words, the message- that’s what matters. I did spend some time thinking about how I felt about TAMBTTB. The more time, the more I liked it. Is it a love? I’m not sure yet. This is a short book (less than 100 pages).

Such an incredible collection of poems, and the first I've read in a while.
