Jones creates a school full of loveable and hateable students and tells this story in an interesting manner. I liked it a lot better now rereading it with my husband, but didn't care for this when I first read it as a teen. It's an interesting entry in the Chresomanci series.

While Jones is known for her child characters that have an actual personality instead of just being "a kid," this book takes an interesting route... Brian, Charles, and Simon are all terrible boys. As main characters, I want to like Brian and Charles, but again and again they're rude for no reason. The book and characters themselves are enjoyable, but it's a shocking characterisation
