I was slightly worried about how this book would go after the rather slow pace of Wizard and Glass. However, what I found in this book was a much more enjoyable story than I felt Wizard and Glass presented. I'm not sure how the next couple of books will go, but I enjoyed this book very much.

You could argue that the story doesn't move too much, but I'm not sure I agree. If anything the potential problem is that the story is getting a little convoluted at this point. With the need to defend the rose in New York becoming evident, the various challenges of some of the individual characters, and the inclusion of a certain book at the very end of the novel, we may be on our way to murky story telling in the future.

However, for the most part this story is centered on Roland and his ka-tet helping the town of Calla Bryn Sturgis. While this didn't necessarily result in a lot of action, you were able to see a fuller picture of how the gunslingers of old worked. You were able to see Roland plan and put that plan in action. Not just by shooting, but by making speeches and meeting with people of the town. It was pretty enjoyable to see.

There was also part of the book that was a lot of flashback, but I found it more interesting than the very long flashback of Wizard and Glass. This flashback was telling the story of Father Callahan, who was from King's novel Salem's Lot (which I haven't read). I found it to be an interesting tale of how he came to be in Roland's world and how his story connected himself to Roland's group.

So overall I found this to be a enjoyable book, back up to the quality of the second and third books. I do worry though if this level will be maintained as we have the potential to have a lot of story to resolve in two books.
