i absolutely loved the 1982 animated film. it would always be my suggestion when asked to pick a movie…my siblings would cry, “Nooo…it’s scary” or say, “We watch that all the time…”

Safe to say they don’t have as much nostalgia as I do.

I started reading Patrick Rothfuss’ introduction and I knew immediately that this was going to be the first book I annotated, and I am SO glad I did. His introduction had me hooked within the first page.

This truly is a book that everyone should read at least once. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. The story itself is captivating and imaginative. Theres’ no fantasy story that can compare to Peter S. Beagle expressive and incredible writing.

(I know this review isn’t about the book, experiencing it for yourself is magic…trust me.)

(While you’re at it watch the film while you’re at it, it’s good!!!)

*this post is dedicated to my Uncle Matt. This is the part of you that will always stick with me. Thank you.)

I think the best word for this story is haunting. It has an otherworldly quality that is both beautiful and ephemeral. It is unlike anything I have ever read. The story of a unicorn discovering she was the last of her kind and setting off on a quest to find out what happened to the others is the basic premise of the story. I was riveted from the first page, but the ending wasn't as satisfying as I wanted it to be, but I think that was the point. And I may have to change the 4 star rating to a 5 if it settles on my heart like I think it may.

I'll be honest, I REALLY wanted to like this book. But it just wasn't for me. But I'm definitely not in the habit of giving a book a bad rating because of my personal preferences.

Simply, as a classic fantasy this just didn't hit the mark for me.

But I'll always appreciate and respect it for what it is and what it means to the world of fantasy literature. It IS beautifully written and if you're a enjoyer of whimsy, poetic language this will be perfect for you.

Like reading a long form fairytale, there are no books truly like this one.
