4.25 This was creeeepy. I love the overlapping storylines bouncing around different timelines and just the eerie feel throughout the book. Perfect October read!

Enjoyed this so much! So tense and atmospheric - I love how everything happened gradually in the lead up to the ending.

The whole ideal of silent companions is so creepy and I liked that the past time line explained where they came from. The witchcraft element was great too.

Would have been 5 stars if there wasn't the subplot of the mental asylum. The ending with Sarah possibly not being real/ being Hetta didn't feel right to me. I'd have preferred it if the whole book was about what was currently happening to Elsie, not a flashback from an asylum where it seems like it's all inside her head. Plus Sarah was my fav character!!

This book was terrifying. It is a true gothic and I LOVED IT, but at the same time OMG, I might not sleep tonight. If you like horror of both the creeping quiet *and* the violent sort, read this. So pleased to have won the giveaway for this gem!

I've taken some time thinking about what to rate this book, because I'm a bit undecisive. I feel like I'm torn between three and four stars.
I really liked the atmosphere in the book and felt like I was pulled into the victorian gothic horror mood immediately upon starting the book. It ticked a lot of boxes: creepy house in foggy area, unexplainable events, creepy servants, is the protagonist going crazy or not, etc. In the end though, I didn't feel like it wrapped up in a satisfying way. There were some red herrings (the 'gypsies') and though I understand the need to include that to keep the reader guessing, for me it made the book a bit too convoluted with possible explanations.
It was a fun quick read though!
