This is a dual timeline book. Half is told when Aninyeh was a child. Half is told as Nena is an adult and an assassin. When she was a child, her family was murdered and she was trafficked. The story when she was a child is brutal and a bit disturbing but the author seemed to make pains to handle it with sensitivity. It is important because it made her the strong woman she became. But when her past comes back to haunt her and all she is trying to make for herself, Nena must decide who is worth saving and how far she will go to save those she loves.

Simple plot but entertaining. Audiobook narration was great. It felt a lot like an action movie.

I really enjoyed reading about an African woman assassin. I’d never read anything like it. I enjoyed learning how Nena’s two worlds collided and how it was written as her “before” and “after”. It was part mysterious and thriller. Would definitely recommend. I’ve already purchased the second book in this trilogy. It’s set to come out this fall and I’m intrigued to see how Nena’s world continues to unfold.

i loved following Nena’s journey in finding her power, strength, and resilience after surviving so many horrific tragedies. i was rooting for her the entire time and left so impressed and emotional over her growth. the writing style is also beautifully unique, the switching between 1st and 3rd person for her “Before” and “After” chapters was a phenomenal choice that truly enhanced the narrative journey. the only thing i didn’t enjoy was the romance subplot, it was a little too insta-love for me and it didn’t make sense that Nena would fall for someone she doesn’t know well that quickly, especially considering all of her trauma. i’m interested to see how it will all play out in the sequel!
