This reads quickly and the writing is smart and witty and the teenagers absolutely sound like the smartest, wittiest versions of real teenagers. I don't love the M. Night plot twist but I accept it as part of the more compelling emotional themes. I wish the adults were given a little more credit as human beings, even coming from a teenage perspective-- they definitely come across as cartoonish more often than not. Overall, a great in-flight read.

It got predictable fast. But I really liked the whole fairy tale analogy thing that author had going on. On the other hand, the general writing style was, for the most part, annoying.
An okay one time read, I guess.

Be normal.
Because you are.

I am so, so glad I decided to pick this up. It was amazing. I am going to do my best to review this without spoilers. Here it goes. The beginning is not very interesting. Unfortunately, I've seen this fact drive away a ton of readers. This is why I suggest the audio. Just keep listening, it ends amazingly. It definitely took me a while to get used the storytelling style that is so unique to E. Lockhart. The ending was amazing. It was like nothing I was imagining. I can't even give vague hints though without ruining the entire story. Aside from the mystery, I really enjoyed the family aspect of this book evening they were the definition of "dysfunctional".
Bottom Line:
5 Solid Stars: A great story with a plot twist like no other.

Hated every second I wasted on this book. Predictable, insufferable. Spoiled children rebelling in the worst way possible and eating their own shit. I can't believe both the author and BookTok are serious about this book and I would hope this is satire but even if it was, it would be shit satire. I'm supposed to feel bad for the "woke" main character who keeps likening POC to animals? And smashing ivory? After you already thought about auctioning it and giving the money to wildlife preservation? What a fucking waste. Neither new, nor cutting, nor any good social commentary. Yikes.

This book is definitely written in a distinct way that at times I felt was annoying. However, the premise and overall plot was interesting enough to keep me going.
