IT HURTS to rate this a 3 because I know it is loved by SO MANY PEOPLE. This book was on my TBR list for a long time and I so looked forward it, but the stories just did not hit for me. I loved the first (titular) story, the end was so unexpected and absolutely smacked me across the face. But after that, the stories lost my interest and most weren't super memorable (except for one later in the book with the drowning. That one I still think about).

I was hoping to love it, but it took me a while to get through!

Excellent short story collection. Moniz is an artist skilled at capturing the nuances of the human condition and relationships at all ages. Some really perceptive insights and stories that pull you in. Themes of family and absent/abusive parents, struggling relationships, friendships, all set against a humid Floridian backdrop. Can’t wait to read her next work!

I found it hard to get in to some of the stories, but I really enjoyed some of them. Overall a very good book!
