I listened to the audiobook. I felt that the book was hard to follow while listening because of all the names and hidden identities.
There were times when I couldn't really tell when the book would go into the case or if it was another scene from Charlotte's life. But I think I would read a second book. However, it would need to be a bit shorter, needs some clarity, and a clear distinction about when we're talking about Charlotte acting as Sherlock Holmes or when she's solving the case as herself.

Tightly written mystery. The differences from and commentary on the Doyle novels was entertaining. My favorite twist was who supports Charlotte as Dr. Watson supports Sherlock Holmes.

I was not expecting the resolution of the mystery, and found it rather jarring for reasons I will put in the content warning section below. The resolution made sense, and the story hangs together well, and the through-lines of narrative about "ruined" ("scarlet") women were really interesting -- the ways in which women had to cope with being damaged in the eyes of the world.
Minor: Child abuse, Incest, Sexual assault, and Trafficking
Readers may want to be aware of certain content in the resolution of the story:
