Bahni Turpin is always excellent as a narrator. However, I did not enjoy the writing. Character development was nonexistent and the foul language was disturbing.

The movie was much better. I give the movie four out of five stars. The ending was different from the book, which is why I subtracted a star. The other irregularity in the movie is the characters did not match the descriptions in the book. I highly recommend the movie.

My first Baldwin (I know I know, it’s been a long time coming) but wow he is a master at his craft. This story is crafted so carefully and lovingly for these people and the love they hold. I felt as if I were feeling the love and anger and despair of Tish and Fonny through every page.
