Heh! Where do I start with this one? It was such a pleasant surprise. I had initially DNF’d it because I had not recognized it for the gem that it was. It was so interesting that they were all connected to the Yacoubian building in some way.
I had no hopes for that ending, however,
Abduh killing Hatim was so necessary, that relationship was so annoying to see. He wasn’t feeling it and Hatim forcing issues was so uncomfortable. Taha! TAHA! It was full circle for you honey huh? You had to die from gihad. Busanya ! What a surprise! Baby, I don’t know about you loving Zaki, but I’m glad it all worked out for you in the end. I wonder what happened to Malak and Dawalt. Dawalt with all her pomp and circumstance to ruin her brothers life for a ring ? I don’t know, this was just heartbreaking.

It was a very necessary read and I’m glad I read it when I did and I recognized it for the gem that it is ……. finally.

this book provided some measure of insight into the minds of different characters. Rather, I should say caricatures, because the author didn't make much effort into making the main cast of characters more than 2 dimensional at best.

I was more interested in the first half than the second. I just thought that the progression of the characters' stories were a little predictable, a little facile and genuflecting to the world view of religious extremism coexisting with secular corruption and what events ensue when disappointment and desperation take hold. The unfolding of the stories was linear, and I'll say again, predictable. I felt for Zaki the most. I liked him.

I read this book and saw the film when it first came out, but felt I wanted to read it again given everything that has been going on in Egypt. I love the way As Aswany creates characters who speak to various aspects of Egyptian society, particularly corruption in the government. Kamal El Fouli is one of those characters who uses stereotyped images of Egyptians in order to control them. Here is a perfect example of that mindset of someone in the regime:

"People are naive when they get the idea that we fix elections. Nothing of the kind. It just comes down to the fact that we've studied the Egyptian people well. Our Lord created the Egyptians to accept government authority. No Egyptian can go against his government. Some peoples are excitable and rebellious by nature but the Egyptian keeps his head down his whole life long so he can eat. It says so in the history books. The Egyptians are the easiest people in the world to rule. The moment you take power, they submit to you and grovel to you and you can do what you want with them. Any party in Egypt, when it makes elections and is in power, is bound to win, because the Egyptian is bound to support the government. It's just the way god made him."

El Fouli shares this insight with the character Hagg Azzam who is coming to El Fouli to help him fix elections in his favor. This analysis of Egyptian society shows El Fouli as a character who views his own people through an Orientalist lens. And reading this today it sounds extremely ironic. There are so many other characters in the novel who are quite richly portrayed all through their overlapping destinies in the Yacoubian building, much like neighborhoods connect characters in Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo trilogy or in Betool Khedeiri's novel "Absent."

A window into Egyptian history/culture/society. This novel could have been a nice collection of short stories as someone else has said on this platform. I will stick to Mahfouz Cairo trilogy.
