sooooo fucked up in such a good way. the writing style is AMAZING and works so well in showing you who the characters are and where their heads are at, including and especially when those aren’t good places to be. i do think the last half dragged a bit which broke the tension a bit. overall really good at  bottling that dread and helplessness and despair and rage that the characters are feeling and force feeding it to you. the thread of storytelling throughout is vvv reflective and chefs kiss

the book opens with a man dying at the hands of a small mob, mostly racially motivated. The actual violence isn't described, but the potential for it is gone over in the character's mind several times in the scene. There are other parts of the book where hate crimes of varying intensity against indigenous people are mentioned or talked about as normal occurances.

If you can’t handle animals brutally dying, this is not the book for you. If you aren’t a fan of basketball, this is not the book for you. It wasn’t a bad book, I just couldn’t get behind all the animal brutality. & that’s a me problem I guess. How the antagonist is set up is pretty cool, it was a little confusing in the beginning. I think switching between main characters so early on threw me off for a minute. But again, probably just a me problem.

This was my first Stephen Graham Jones book, and overall I really liked it. I love a good revenge story, and with the culture and themes blended throughout this story, and that ending!! - made for such a horror novel that I think will stay with me.
