Holy moly. It's fitting that my last book of 2023 would be such a rollercoaster! Harmel does it again by taking you on a rollercoaster of emotions, from hating the main characters to crying at the end. I was about ready to knock down a star because of not giving one character their happy ending but she did.

My only tiny, almost microscopic annoyance is that the French words aren't translated and even though, normally that would knock off a star, Harmel's masterful storytelling overrides it.

Liv has just went through a divorce and her grandmother swoops in and takes her to Paris so she can heal(at least that's what she thinks). Ines has a secret that she has been keeping for over 70 years. She wants to come clean before she dies. Kristin wrote a heartbreaking, but inspiring story about WWII in Paris. She reminds us of what war can cost a family for generations. She shows us how fear, love, heartbreak, and pain influence our decisions.  I was hoping that Ines would have meet Celine and they would discuss what happened all those years ago. What a painful masterpiece.
