Well, it's not exactly brilliant, but this over-the-top silly fantasy adventure is funny, engaging and cute. There are lots of dangling dicks and crude jokes but still quite a soft core to it all. I'll certainly read the stories of Calarian and Dave too.

“Grub, it’s been an experience.”

I had so much fun with this one. Seriously, that only one line cracks me up so much. Red Heir was a fun story about a rescue party for a long lost prince gone wrong. The story especially shone thanks to its dialogues and its witty, charming and shameless protagonist whom I very much love. The first thirty-forty per cent of the book was absolutely hilarious, and I'd have loved this book if the rest had kept up with this first half.

Being completely honest the turning point for me was when Grub was not being called Grub anymore. That was were the downfall started and we never really recovered. Grub, you will be dearly missed.

As I said, I really loved the silly, light tone that the book had. However, when it tried to be serious it lost this big strength and I don't think it succeeded in balancing a sober tone with the comedy aspect. It came off as anti-climatic, at best, and downright awkward in some scenes. I felt this was true with the romance and erotic parts as well: past the first half of the story, it didn't go well with the general tone of the book. This story sought to be taken seriously from time to time, but it was barely an option with two-dimensional characters and a too-convenient, superficial plot.

I'd have loved if this book had stayed on the fun adventure theme, focusing on the comedy and a slower-burn romance and leaving behind the consuming romance, sexy parts and too-solemn plot points. Also, I really could have better of without so many jokes about
Spoilerhorse-fucking and elf sex
. Like, really. Also if somebody has not noticed yet, this is a +18 book. Like, I wasn't bothered by this but I wasn't expecting it, because the synopsis looks so much juvenile-childish.

Anyhow, I really enjoyed this book when it wasn't trying to take itself too seriously, and had a really fun read overall!

I have mixed feelings about this because I don't think it has any significant flaws but still didn't work for me as well as I wanted it to. Plus I nearly DNF'd halfway through, but decided to push on because I'm under the weather and it's a nice light-hearted fantasy that kept my entertained for a day.

What didn't work for me:
- The humour generally (rarely landed for me)
- I'm not really a sexual humour kind of person so that Really didn't land
- Scott who was too irritating to find funny
- The romance could have been better developed
- The writing style wasn't really jiving with me, maybe because it only focuses on Loth's perspective and he's a bit of an arrogant ass most of the time, which wasn't for me

What I liked:
- Lovable side characters
- The relationship dynamic between the main couple (jerk who learns to care and standoffish guy who learns to open up)
- the plot generally being a silly little fantasy romp
- Pie the adorable dragon and Dave the adorable orc <3
- The satirical take on fantasy and fantasy races (okay the anarchistic elves were pretty funny)

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy in this comedic vein, even though for me personally it was just kind of okay.

I CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW THIS IS A FIVE STAR READ BUT I LOVE A QUEST WITH INCOMPETENT QUESTERS! This reads like a wonderful fanfiction, other comments have mentioned a DND campaign which I agree with, and I was kicking my feet and laughing out loud while listening to this audio at work
