Life rarely goes according to plan. Great book to teach kids flexibility in the schedule.

I love love love these picture books in the Little Senses series. This one, about dealing with change and disappointment, is a great choice for kids who struggle with changes to the plan. Laila is presumed neurodiverse (she uses a picture schedule and has a service dog), but both neurodiverse and neurotypical children who struggle with change may find this story useful. Not only does it demonstrate a child coping when change is hard, but it presents some coping mechanisms (updating the picture schedule, taking some time in a quiet spot, remembering a time when you dealt with change and repeating the mantra "I've been through this before and I can do it again") that may help children learn to cope.

I get asked on the regular for picture books about helping kids deal when "things aren't perfect" and I think this is a story that will fit the bill!

I checked this one out without knowing it was meant to be ability-diverse, so that was a pleasant surprise. This has a great plot about dealing with situations we can't control versus what we can, and there are helpful strategies in the back for helping young ones navigate these kinds of stresses.

I really liked this, and I think it would be really good to read with any child that is particularly set in their ways and gets distressed when things go wrong. That is especially the case with kids on the autism spectrum, and this book has great tips at the back and excellent modeling throughout of great ways to deal with it. However, I'm an adult woman on the autism spectrum, and when the cake got ruined I almost cried. I'm almost crying now thinking about it!! I don't think I could ever read it for story time because I would get too worked up. It's a good exercise in distress tolerance, but I still find it wildly upsetting.

Part of a series dedicated to the experiences of children on the autism spectrum. A great choice for any child who has difficulty with the unexpected.

I think this is my favorite Little Senses book so far. These books are great for navigating social and sensory skills for autistic kiddos. Highly recommend! It was also great to see a visual schedule modeled and showcased in a picture book.

Another fantastic SEL book from the "Little Senses" series.

For Libraries: If you don't already have these books, they are a must buy!
