In un universo composto da ventuno Arche vive Ofelia. Originaria dell'arca "Anima", è una ragazza timida, goffa e un po' miope ma con due doni particolari: può attraversare gli specchi e leggere il passato degli oggetti. La sua vita cambia quando le Decane decidono di darla in sposa al nobile Thorn, della potente famiglia dei Draghi.
Thorn è un uomo freddo e misterioso che vive su un'altra arca, "Polo", molto più fredda e inospitale di Anima, abitata da bestie giganti e famiglie sempre in lotta tra loro. Ofelia dovrà seguire il suo fidanzato in un mondo ostile e pericoloso, dove niente è come sembra.
Il punto di forza del libro è sicuramente l'ambientazione, originale e suggestiva. L' autrice crea un universo in cui la magia e la tecnologia si fondono in un'atmosfera tipica della Belle Époque. Le Arche offrono una varietà di ambienti e di culture. Il sistema magico è basato sui doni, abilità particolari che ogni persona possiede e che si manifestano in modi diversi. Lo stile dell'autrice è scorrevole ed evocativo in grado di mantenere alta l'attenzione e la curiosità del lettore.
I personaggi sono vari e ben delineati sia quelli principali che quelli secondari. Un aspetto negativo del libro è la rappresentazione delle donne, che sono ridotte a dei cliché e a degli stereotipi. Ofelia proviene da una società matriarcale solo di facciata, che in realtà non le dà alcuna libertà né rispetto. La ragazza viene costretta a sposarsi contro la sua volontà, senza che le venga data una spiegazione o una scelta. Ofelia deve abbandonare la sua famiglia, il suo lavoro, la sua Arca, per seguire un uomo che non conosce e che non la ama. La nostra protagonista si trova in una situazione di sottomissione e di dipendenza, in cui non ha voce né potere. Le donne su Anima, così come al Polo, puntano sul loro fascino per sedurre e manipolare gli uomini, non lavorano e devono sottostare agli uomini. Questo è un aspetto del libro che ho trovato molto negativo e pericoloso perché la Dabos non valorizza le donne e non promuove la parità e il rispetto tra uomo e donna, ma li contrappone e li divide. L'autrice non offre un messaggio positivo ed emancipatorio alle lettrici, ma un messaggio negativo. Su Polo per esempio il sogno delle nobildonne è di diventare le amanti di Faruk per poi essere etichettate come cortigiane, se ci riescono!
È vero che ci sono stati periodi storici in cui le donne erano trattate in questo modo ed è lecito parlarne ma in questo romanzo a parte la protagonista e sua zia le altre donne non hanno dignità né valori. Io lo trovo poco credibile!
Ofelia è una ragazza che subisce passivamente le decisioni altrui, senza mai ribellarsi o difendersi. Nonostante abbia dei poteri speciali e una grande intelligenza si lascia umiliare, maltrattare dalla famiglia di Thorn senza mai reagire o protestare.
La ragazza non ha carattere, non ha autostima, non ha ambizioni e si lascia manipolare da Thorn e dalla sua famiglia che la considerano una pedina.
In conclusione, Fidanzati dell'inverno è un libro che ha dei pregi e dei difetti, che mi hanno lasciato sentimenti contrastanti. Da una parte, ho apprezzato l'originalità e la fantasia del mondo creato dall'autrice tuttavia ho avuto molti problemi con la protagonista e con la rappresentazione delle donne, che ho trovato poco credibili e frustranti. Inoltre nonostante le pagine di Fidanzati dell’inverno siano piene di pericoli, tradimenti e misteri, non mi hanno trasmesso nessuna emozione perché si tratta di situazioni frivole, ripetitive e che non fanno progredire la trama. Non metto in dubbio il fatto che un romanzo possa rappresentare personaggi negativi ma non ho trovato interessante la lettura che non offre nessun insegnamento né spunti di riflessione. Non lo consiglio!

Final Buddy read for 2023 was spectacularly and regrettably disappointing.
Firstly, I want to note that I don’t know how much my (many) criticisms with the novel are to do with the original work or its translation.
To start with the positives, I really enjoyed the opening of this novel and was absolutely fascinated by the magical realism of the world in which our characters lived (moreso Anima than The Pole). The mystery and intrigue of the story kept me interested enough to continue despite giving zero f#%$s about the characters by the end of the novel. The one shining light in the abysmal dark that was A Winter’s Promise was Scarf, it stole my heart and made me want my own grumpy slightly murderous sentient clothing.
Now for everything else (re: negatives). As I’ve already stated, none of the characters are remotely likeable or redeemable in any way, shape, or form. Each character has one characteristic that is repeatedly shoved, ad nauseam, down the reader’s throats. Ophelia is the epitome of a helpless heroine who is plain, unattractive, clumsy, constantly ill, and entirely boring. Thorn is a tall, hulking giant with an ice cold demeanour and did I mention tall. Berenilde is beautiful, gorgeous, ethereal, breathtaking…did I run out of synonyms for how stunning she is. Then there are a whole host of side characters who, you guessed it, are also defined by a single characteristic with either little to no development or explanation. However, one of the most egregious descriptors is how often Ophelia, whose entire storyline is being married off, is described by everyone as a child. If she is such a child then why is everyone ok with her getting married?! This gave me serious ick and really pulled me out of the story. This was constantly reinforced by the juxtapositions between Ophelia and Thorn at every turn and their nonexistent ‘love’ story. Seriously, when did that happen? Between the mental torture or the physical torture Ophelia was put through by everyone in order to co-opt her power and turn her into a breeding mare. Gross!
The story itself had potential but ended up going nowhere because…Nothing. Actually. Happened. For the entire book I kept waiting for the plot to appear but it never did. There was some nice descriptions of the world but also some very confusing ones but that could be to do with the translation. Perhaps the plot emerges further into the series, but I don’t think the pages are worth it.
Overstuffed with so many tropes, like an eclair about to burst, this was unfortunately a mess. It had so much potential but lost all power and steam turning into a muddled disappointing soup of regrets and wasted opportunities, which ultimately left a bad taste. I cannot recommend this to anyone as I definitely won’t be continuing with this series. Hopefully this finds someone else to love because I certainly didn’t.

a little underwhelming. i enjoyed it more towards the end but it was pretty slow. didn't really care for the characters much & character development wasn't really there for the main character. i would be interested to see how the rest of the series is but its low on my list & i'm not eager to continue
