Another solid "meh" for me. I didnt mind the wo person POV both in 1st person, but it can throw some people off. I just didnt connect with the characters. This was another in my angels/demons research for my own book.

Its been 13 years since the end of the world. River is 22 and takes care of her neglected brothers. Her mother is horrible to her. River has no idea who her father is. She fishes to feed her family. She also has visions and occasionally lights something on fire. No one knows about this except her best friend and little brother. One day her mother turns her into the authorities who are looking for "people with special powers." This is when she meets Kobal.

Kobal is a huge demon who thinks River might be "the one they've been looking for." It's all very vague. He never answers River's questions and they dislike each other, but are attracted.

Turns out there are two sides to the demon war.
"Hell became divided into two factions who have battled each other ever since. The Palitons, my side, who fights against Lucifer, and the Craetons who follow him.”

This book is the set up for a series, but there wasn't much of a story. It wasn't interesting enough for me to want to continue the series. I haven't been that impressed with Brenda K. Davies. She likes to write spicy scenes and enemies to lovers tropes, but the plot is too light and the details too complicated. I just don't feel like it was well done at all.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and I enjoyed that with the different voice the reader used, you could tell who was talking. Each character was distinctively different.

The story was interesting.. the fact that her mother never liked her and then had been the one to turn her over was horrible, but yet I totally should have seen it coming. The way that River got her back in the end was perfect, it was one less thing she had to worry about.

Kobal is an interesting character.. I kept picturing him with red skin even though the book states multiple times what color it is.. he is a hard headed creature. I think what bothered me most about him was that he never explained anything to River. So many problems could have been solved by just talking and explaining things. Like the fact that she is his chosen. What does that mean? That he chose her or that she is his fated chosen? These details were never fully explained to River.

I think there could have been more of an explanation on how she grew her powers or how she figured out how to make each one work. That part was kind of left out.

I did however enjoy the little spicy bits that were throughout the book. They were well written and captivating.

I loved this book. I'm kind of iffy with fantasy books in that they don't always hold my interest. However this one definitely did. It's like a cross between a little bit  of the Hunger Games, a little bit of the first Red Queen book when she is discovering who she is, and a little bit of the show Supernatural with the demons and angels and Lucifer coming into play. I hope the rest of the series is just as good. If you love Romantasy type books you should give this one a try.

I loved this series. This book hooked me from the start and I pretty much binged the rest of the series within a week.
The characters are well written and their dialogue just comes alive when reading. If you like dark paranormal romances then you'll love this book, as well as the rest of the books in this series. Now I'm just waiting for the spin offs. :)

Chosen one + NLG and too much boring hell lore.

Great romantasy book. I loved the complex nature of the story line, and the bonds Kobal and River made. Even the small connections made closer to the end of the book.
