Vincent, Jules, Sylvie, and Sam are ruthlessly ambitious high-flyers working in the lucrative world of Wall Street finance where deception and intimidation thrive. Getting rich is all that matters, and they'll do anything to reach the top.

The premise alone is amazing. Not only does it take place in an accounting firm, but it also is centered around an escape room. I've never done an escape room but from what I've read, they seem terrifying. I can only imagine the terror of being trapped in one for days.

Even though there are five main characters, each one of them are excellently crafted and written. I connected with each one and felt there pain, happiness and sadness with them.
The deal sealer for me was the plot. Sooo, many plot twists. I could help but gasp every time I turned the page. It was the most fun I've had with a book this year.

Many thanks to Jordan at St. Martin's Press sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review

Never met an escape room I didn’t like... this book included! Seeing as how my friends and I frequently pay people to trap us in rooms for 60 minutes for fun, it comes as no surprise that The Escape Room drew me in from the get-go.

While I’m v thankful I’ve never been in one quite like this—y’know, casually fighting for my life in an elevator with 3 of my evil co-workers who wouldn’t hesitate to kill me to move up the corporate ladder—I absolutely LOVED reading about all the craziness that these greedy, self-absorbed, money-hungry bankers had to endure.

Although I did feel like the ending was a bit rushed, there is no denying that Megan Goldin DELIVERED with her debut psychological thriller. Definitely going to be on the lookout for more books by her in the future!

Another Megan Goldin win. I love how she approaches the story and develops the characters.

Escape rooms are normally a fun, team building activity, but in this book it's a nightmare. The story was spun brilliantly, each character was well fleshed out, the two different timelines working together rather than hindering each other, and the ending was very dramatic and well timed although a terrible surprise. I did not want to put this book down it was sooo good, the twists I was not expecting at all, and everything was brilliantly tied together. One of the best books I have read this year.

Vincent, Jules, Sylvie, and Sam all receive emails from a generic HR email from the financial company they work for, Stanhope and Sons, inviting them to participate in an escape room in a high-rise building, attendance is mandatory. Fearing job cutbacks, all four eagerly climb into the elevator determined to prove their dedication and prove why the company needs to keep them. But when the elevator lights go off, the heat goes up, and the doors stay shut, the four quickly learn that there is more to this escape room than they first thought. "Welcome to the escape room. Your goal is simple. Get out alive."

Ok…if you have ever had to slug away in the dreadful depths of Corporate America - or Corporate Anywhere - then this book is for you! I dwelled in the cruel claustrophia of cubicles and soulless sweater-vest wearing suck ups for well over ten years. And this story was a great rage room-type of release for all those dreary deadlines met, comments about idiot co-workers kept quiet, and the hellish hypocrisy that masks itself so easily amongst the corporate core values and mission statements.

So, it goes without saying that I very much love the main character Sara. She becomes quite successful in the game that is office politics and making money, until the murder of a co-worker smashes the shiny veneer. I hate to divulge too much as it would definitely detract from the slow-build of the story, but just know this is more of a revenge-read with a murder mystery tucked neatly inside than it is a tale about an epic escape room.

In a higher sense, there very much is an escape, though it’s more about how one has to handle the puzzles of corporate politics and back-stabbing betrayals to successfully secure an exit from the odious office life that packs the punch here. Because sometimes it very much is a choice as to what you’re willing to put up with and when it all becomes too much…or even deadly.

There is a literal escape room within the setting but it is more of a means to an end than a primary plot driver.

In all, this book may not end up turning into the tale you expect at the outset, but it was an interesting, fun novel nonetheless.

”Their hands were soft, and clean, and free of calluses. But only because they never touched the blood they spilt.”

i was pleasantly surprised at how this book sucked me in. we dont have to talk about how it literally took me three (3) months to finish (i was going through a terrible reading slump/depression spell)
the characters in this book were actually terrible people, minus lucy and sara, and it was actually perplexing to see what money drives people to do. the stanhope firm reminded me a lot of that tom cruise movie called ‘the firm’ where they were practically in a cult!
the ending was actually insane but felt a little flat.
i wanted to see them rot HEHEHEHE but it was all over so quickly.

I liked it a lot. The dual storylines were both intriguing and I wasn't sure how it would all shake out. The ending was a bit rushed and I wanted a bit more detail to be fleshed out but overall, really good.
