Hm, I liked the first one better? I didn't like how Arie had no control for basically the entire book, and though I liked Rena, she is a bit annoying at times. Not her fault, I guess, she's just very one-track-minded lol. It was still not a bad read at all, though I also wasn't a fan of the end.

The plot thickens and continues!! There is so much that happened here. I can't help but feel horrible for what Arie is suffering, all because she's trying to do right by her kingdom. I so hope that Enoch and Amir get what's coming to them. I loved getting to know more of Gideons backstory. And my heart breaks for what Jezebel has become. Rena is so sweet and I'm so glad she found Gideon again. I hope they end up together, but so many things are complicated and up in the air. I so hope Arie makes it through this!! I'm terrified for her.

I am so glad Once Upon a book club introduced me to this author. Bethany is such an amazing writer. She makes fantasy so fun. The second book of the series is a retelling of Little mermaid. I loved how it picked up exactly where the first one ended. Can’t wait for the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed the main character and her love interest. They were so sweet together! And the ending made me smile. Very good book.

The Jinni Key is a solid sequel to The Stolen Kingdom, but I did not feel particularly gripped by the story. Bethany Atazadeh's novels are tightly plotted, which makes the reading experience quick and entertaining. I, however, didn't feel as compelled as I would hope.

The novel jumps right to Rena, as we discover her world and the reason she came to Hodafez. We still get glimpses of the characters we already know, but this is truly Rena's story.

The world gets expanded right from the start. The Mere's domain was fun to explore for a while but I do not feel attached to it, or that intrigued by it. The unlikableness of pretty much everyone under there does not make me want to go back. Outside of that, the characters stay within what is known. I would have liked a bit more on that front.

As mentioned previously, we follow the characters we met in the previous book but the focus is shifted to Rena, the mysterious Mere girl we were briefly introduced to at the end of book 1. She is somewhat interesting but I found myself liking her at times and being quite annoyed at her at others. She was not a character I was entirely rooting for. I would have liked to deepen further our understanding of the other characters like Kadin, Bosh, and Gideon.
The romance was well-done and I was pleasantly taken by surprise by the development.
SpoilerI found myself starting to ship Rena with Bosh, they had some cute scenes but I kept myself from getting too invested because of the whole Gideon thing. I was happy to see that twist.

When it comes to the plot, I was a bit disappointed by Arie's side story.
SpoilerIt felt like a rehashing of the plot of book 1. The whole mind control thing being reused completely was a bit of a drag to read again. It felt like the big defeat of book 1 was basically for nothing. I'm happy Amir is dead tho, that was satisfying lol
The ending left some impactful consequences which I am intrigued to see unfold and resolved in the rest of the series.
SpoilerWith that being said, I would have liked Bosh's injury to be a bit more lasting. I felt like the resolution was a bit easy. Also, that whole furniture falling on the people coming in thing... I wish it had only happened once instead of reusing the same tactic twice, for more variety.

The Queen of the Jinn gets mentioned quite a bit, and I am itching for her to make her big entrance which I expect to come soon. I am eager to understand her plan and goals. Bethany Atazadeh created an interesting world and it was nice to see a bit more of it in this one. The Mere folks were different but I am not really that invested in them apart from maybe seeing the consequences of the ending deal.
SpoilerNow that Yuliya has the Key, will she come into play in future books or is the door closed on the Mere for now?

I enjoyed this sequel in the Stolen Kingson series, though I did not find it very memorable. Overall I am satisfied with The Jinni Key, but I did not feel as invested as I would hope to be.

This is one of those rare instances where I enjoyed a sequel more than the first book.
